REFERRAL

The referral for this job came to Care and Repair via an Occupational Therapist’s Recommendation.

CASEWORKER ASSIGNED

The caseworker visited to carry out administrative tasks such as discussions with the client on the most appropriate source of finance for the building works. A grant application was considered so a preliminary Test of Resources established eligibility for a Disabled Facilities Grant. (Clients finance privately some of the adaptations we organise).

SURVEY & SCHEDULE OF WORKS

The caseworker passed the recommendations on to the Technical officer to follow up with a fully detailed survey of the bathroom. He used this information to prepare drawings of the existing bathroom and a proposed layout of the adaptations together with a schedule of works. The proposals were sent to Occupational Therapist and Client for Approval.

Once we had received OT & Client Approval the work was sent to two contractors to price the works.

THE BRIEF

The brief for this particular adaptation was to provide a revised layout to suit the client mobility & health problems and to integrate the W.C in with the new shower and basin area, as the current W.C was separate to the rest of the facilities, albeit adjacent.

The layout of the bathroom was particularly awkward as the bathroom was partly over the neighbouring property so careful consideration had to be given to the waste route and location of shower area as the shower gully has to be placed in the floor to achieve Level access.

CLIENT CHOICE

The client chose her own style of tiles and floor covering colour. The bathroom was created so the clients own requirements were always at the forefront of the scheme and this also helped the client to feel partly in control of what was being carried out in her own home.

The client is elderly and frail and we ensured that all liaisons through us and the contractors were through the client’s daughter - in - law as requested.

The OT also requested a freestanding-wheeled shower chair, which was to be provided by Social Services and we had to liaise with SS to enable this to be prepared in time.

COMPLETED ADAPTATION

The contractors took app 3 weeks to complete the adaptations to a very high standard with the end result being an extremely happy client who was now able to keep herself clean and feel more independent in her own home.
